P2-26-03: Benchmarking AS2885 Against International Geohazards Research & Standards

Written by GIRA | Sep 2, 2026, 6:34:25 AM

Project Overview

There has been significant movement in international research and standards that guide industry best practice for managing the impact of geohazards on pipelines since 2018.  This has been driven by:

  • the increased recognition of the impact climate change is having on critical infrastructure and enhanced risk management and financial reporting requirements,

  • a recognition of the anthropogenic hazards associated with land development in the vicinity of pipelines,
  • recognition that pipelines are operating beyond their original design life and are exposed to unanticipated geohazards, and
  • a number of strain-based pipeline failures that have occurred globally.

This project will benchmark the AS(/NZS) 2885 series (Parts 1, 3, and 6) against international geohazard research and updated global standards published since 2018 to identify critical gaps in current Australian practice.
