Project Overview
This research project investigates the phenomenon of inclined stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in legacy gas transmission pipelines, with a focus on X65-grade steels commonly used in the 1970s and 1980s. The project aims to develop new methods for early detection, accurate sizing, and improved integrity management of these under-recognized threats. The outcomes will support safer, more targeted maintenance strategies across Australia’s ageing pipeline network. The first stage of this project is a literature review to consolidate existing knowledge from industry and academia, which will inform future work to understand susceptibility factors and provide recommendations for identifying and managing inclined SCC.
