Project Overview
This project will investigate how arc burns, also known as arc strikes, affect the long-term integrity of gas pipelines and whether current repair requirements can be improved. Arc burns are localised defects caused by unintended welding contact and are often found on older pipelines constructed before modern welding controls were introduced. The ultimate aim of this work is to develop evidence-based recommendations for updating the requirements in AS 2885.3, specifically regarding the repair of arc burns located in the vicinity of welds on in-service pipelines. This literature review is intended to inform potential future stages of research on arc burns, including FEA analysis, lab-scale testing and full-scale testing to validate the recommendations.
